Is the Future of Books in Mobile Ebook Reading?

That's a good question. Does the future of books lie in the increasing popularity of mobile eBook reading? eBook readers have certainly advanced a great deal in recent months, partially because they allows people to access a large number of titles without having to travel to libraries and bookstores, and also because they are convenient. There are no heavy books to carry around, and the majority of mobile readers fit comfortably in the pocket

One issue that some might have with mobile eBook readers is the text size, which is generally 7 point, though it is easier when the 'full screen' option is used. Like their larger counterparts, mobile readers enable you to bookmark your place and store your favorite links for later use. In many cases the text can be made easier to read by increasing the font size, and with it you can often bold the view to improve the readability.

Compared to a traditional book, there is a number advantages offered by an eBook reader, and because of these it is assuming increasing popularity among those for whom reading is a serious business as well as with those that read for pleasure.

Among the benefits for both types of reader is the fact that mobile eBook reading can be enjoyed whenever you want to read, as opposed to whenever you have a book available. Imagine the benefits on long haul flights, when you can save on the weight and inconvenience of carrying a number of books, and you can use one to read on the underground, train or even when standing in a queue!

You will also save on electricity, since you can read at night without having to put your light on. You can read in bed then switch off the reader - it will remember your place - rather than the light. Researchers find it very convenient, and the e-ink technology even makes it look as though you were reading a book printed with real ink, rather than a pixilated computer or cell phone font.

The leader in the U.S. mobile eBook reading field is currently Amazon, with its Kindle 2 and DX, which are also offered in the UK or Europe starting October 19. Although you have the pick of the Amazon library of books at around 80% of the standard price, you cannot give them away, sell them or even lend them to a friend. So, some of the benefits of owning a physical book are lost. However, if you buy books only for yourself, you will save money in addition to the aforementioned benefits.

The most popular portable e-reader in Europe is the Sony PRS, and others include the Cool-er, iRex iLiad, the BeBook and the Hanlin V2. They are all getting into it, so it must be felt that this is a growing technology that is going to catch on more than it already has done. It is also reported that Apple are about to launch a tablet with e-reader capability and a touch screen. According to the article "Apple's Plan to Enter the E-reader Market" the current buzz is that it will have a 9.6 inch color screen using OLED technology, although others have mentioned a 13 inch tablet with a $500 price tag.

Apart from the range of books offered by Amazon for its Kindle range, the Sony Reader allows you access to a large library of books in the public domain that are therefore free to download. It also gives you access to Google e-books, which is a very large range of options to have, particularly if you are carrying out technical research. Others offer a smaller range of books, but all are growing.

The one thing that aficionados of real books will lose is the touch and feel of a book in their hands. That feel and smell of a real leather binding, for example, and the physical sensation of holding it and turning the pages. Those that have never experienced that, however, will wonder what there is to miss, and a day will come when this is the only way of reading books, and the old paper versions will be consigned to the archives. It might take a generation or two, but it will happen, in the same way that steam-driven locomotives are now museum pieces.

However, there is one aspect of mobile eBook reading that might become more relevant in the future, and that may impact on such as Amazon and the smaller manufacturers. That is the question of flexibility, and this is possibly why Apple has taken so long to enter the market. The day of dedicated e-readers might be numbered because people generally prefer to use one device for as many applications as possible.

The future likely lies in a portable eBook reader that downloads and plays music, offers internet access, incorporates a digital camera and can be used as a mobile phone. In other words, Apple might come along shortly and set new standards. If that is the case then there are exciting times ahead as we watch the response of Sony and Amazon and the result of a battle that can only be of benefit to us, the customers.

I'm an Adult - Why Am I Reading Childrens' Books?

Let's face it - some of the best writers being published today are writing for children (or young adults). You only have to mention Phillip Pullman (His Dark Materials) or J.K.Rowling ( Harry Potter) to see what we mean.
There is a long tradition of children's books being read and loved by adults.
Alice in Wonderland, Swallows and Amazons, Black Beauty are all classics that were originally written for children. In fact, you will find that more adults have read 'The Wind in the Willows' than children.
For the really sensitive, there are 'Adult Versions' of Harry Potter, or 'The Dog That Barked In The Nightime', but to be honest, there is no shame attached to reading these books. They are all very good books. As are Eoin Colfer's 'Artemis Fowl' books. In fact, sci-fi and fantasy prove fertile ground for cross-over books - see Garth Nix for example. And the 'Twilight' series of teenage-vampire-romance (now there's a genre!) appears to be enjoyed by adults and teens alike. There are even websites and forums dedicated to the books for adult fans.
'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' by John Boyne is a spare and powerfully affecting story of the Holocaust aimed at younger readers but which has meaning for older readers too. And adults and children can read this book in different ways, not least because adults will know more of the background and can see the whole picture, in a way that younger readers probably wouldn't.
Writing for younger readers often means that the writer is forced to use a greater clarity and simpler language in order to get his or her message across. At its best, this can make for a shining simplicity of prose that can almost blend into poetry.
I will never forget a ghastly rain-drenched holiday in Florida only made bearable by reading Pullman's masterly saga for 2 weeks! Whenever I think of 'The Subtle Knife', I hear thunder and heavy rain! Many people enjoy these books because they can be entertaining and insightful, without being too 'heavy' or 'difficult' in the sense that a lot of adult fiction can be.
If you haven't tried these books before, perhaps because you thought they were only for kids, why not give them a go?

The Importance of Reading Books to Children

It is surprising but true; in today's technology-dependent world, little focus is being placed on the importance of reading to kids. Getting children book selections and reading to kids is important now if the children are to develop a desire for reading in the future or for the long term. Kids books and reading are a vital component for brain development too; the more a child reads, the easier it is to learn new material and to assimilate it into his or her learning.
Book reading is definitively an important factor in every child's life. Book reading opens new doors for children allowing them to explore other parts of the world, new ideas, new concepts, new cultures, and novel innovations. Reading to kids when they are young instills the joy of discovery in children and encourages children to want to learn and/or to read more in later years. Kids books are filled with wonderful tales, characters, and adventures: these are memories that kids will have for the rest of their lives.
Book reading teaches children how to do new things, how to handle life situations, how to develop morals, and how to forever remain curious about the world. Parents that are reading to kids are giving their children a vital educational gift since a lifelong love of reading can make the child's life more successful, happy, and full. While it is true that the Internet is becoming a learning resource for children, it is equally true that a good reading ability is needed to actually harness the educational offerings on the Internet. Thus, book reading should come first, and an appreciation of the Internet and technology should come second.
Kids books are inexpensive, and a visit to the library can result in access to a free book to read, so there is no reason why parents should not be reading to kids. It is possible to get a children book title right online too; there are many free classical kids books online which can be read directly from the website or which can be downloaded into an eBook reader for reading enjoyment. Still, nothing beats the moment when parents share quality time with their children reading to kids in person. The act of reading to kids becomes a way to develop a close parent child relationship while simultaneously promoting a love of reading.

Reading The Right Books

Reading the right books on different subjects can broaden our mind. Your mind is exposed to different cultures, traditions around the world. Through reading, you get an opportunity to closely understand the cultures, traditions and practices exist in different countries. Reading translated works from other languages will help you to understand the lifestyle, history of the countries from which the book is originally written. Moreover, reading helps you to improve your language also.
Reading helps you to look into the past, to closely observe mankind's travel to this modern world. Reading helps you to travel in a time machine; it helps you to talk to our ancestors. It reveals many secrets for us.
Reading is totally different from the experience of watching a movie, or listening to radio. Both these activities require our partial involvement. Reading requires our mind's total involvement during the reading process. So select a calm and quite place for reading. If you are reading a book on a hard subject, this is especially important. A small distraction can turn your mind's involvement from the reading. Make it a habit to read the preface of any book you are going to read. It helps you to understand what the book is really about. It gives an overview about the book, the subject it handles etc. When you read the preface you get an overall idea about the book and it helps you to decide whether to read the whole book or not.
A good book helps to improve our lifestyle, our outlook towards the whole life. Bible is a good example of this. Bible contains the rise and fall of many civilizations; its contents also help one to make changes in his or her life.

Why Only One Out of Thirty-Three People Read Books

It happens every spring, but this year, the questioning has been particularly intense. Every month of April, on occasion of the London Book Fair, newspapers publish articles speculating if it still makes sense to publish books. At the turn of the century, one thousand book titles were published for every feature-length movie made. Today, the ratio is one to six hundred. The number of movies produced every year has increased and, at the same time, the number of published books has diminished."We live in a visual world," sociologists argue. "In many areas, the written word is becoming a relic of previous centuries." Media analysts blame the trend on video-games and portable DVD players. Others simply say that reading requires too much effort after our long work schedules. In my view, those commentators are missing the point completely. Despite the abundance of cheap visual entertainment, readers' motivation remains strong. The reason why people read books has nothing to do with the demands of society and everything to do with individual psychology.1.- MINORITY VIEWS: Visual media, due to its structure and economics, is unable to express minority views in a consistent, intellectual manner. In this respect, all has been tried and all has failed. Complex ideas cannot be transmitted without the written word. No photograph and no movie can replace a chain of reasoning built in clear sentences.2.- DIVERSITY: Films, television, and radio, despite the growing number of channels, can only thrive when they aim at large audiences. They can offer multiplicity in the multitude, but no original ideas. Digital video has reduced the budget necessary to make a movie, but not the distribution costs. Actors, good lighting, and a decent soundtrack are still expensive. Books, on the other hand, can still be published and distributed cheaply.3.- FRESH IDEAS: In a movie, special effects cannot cure the problems of a weak scenario. Even great acting is unable to sustain a filmed story that doesn't make any sense. How long ago is it since you saw a really thought-provoking movie? How often do you gain deep insights from watching television? The written word remains the ideal means to transmit innovative ideas. The good news about reading is that three per cent of the population still remain avid readers. One out of thirty-three is not a bad proportion at all. A strong audience for writers is still there and it is not going to become smaller in the foreseeable future.Do people read internet blogs for the same reason that they love books? Is it because they want to read original ideas? Do they do it in order to enjoy some fresh writing?
I suspect that, for most, the main drivers are the joy of discovering something new and a steadfast refusal to join the other thirty-two.
