Discipline is a skill. Everyone can develop this skill. It is easy for some, while it is next to impossible for others. This is what discipline does. It forces or encourages you to do what is required of you. It prevents or stops you from doing any activity that is unnecessary, or detrimental to your goals and desires. For example, it takes discipline to stop overeating and to stay on course of your weight loss goals.
With parenting discipline, you learn the skills of efficient parenting. Child disciplining books may not give you the accurate lessons. More than taking lessons, it takes discipline and self-confidence to follow the route of parenting discipline.
If you smoke or drink before your kids, it is parenting indiscipline. Similarly, if you leave your toddler unattended, it is also not parenting discipline. You need to provide a safe and relaxing environment for your kids.
Here are a few pointers that will help you:
If you have a toddler, make sure he/she doesn't have access to anything that can damage your toddler's health. Similarly, remove anything (say, an electronic gadget) that the toddler can damage.
If you shout before your kids, your 'don't shout' lessons have little meaning to your kids. He sees it is OK to shout, as long as you are shouting at a weaker person.
Be consistent in enforcing consequences. If you enforce consequences one day and doesn't do so the next day, it is confusing for your kids. It is bad parenting discipline. You should enforce the consequence - whatever it is, whenever your kid violates your rules or limits.
You may not get these lessons from child disciplining books. After all, our grandparents didn't read any child disciplining books while they raised our parents. It can't be said about our parents though.
Make child disciplining a natural part of your life. It is not to be pulled out when the need arises.It is the way of living. So learning experience in university or college may give you a hand.
